Designed with built-in magnets to attach directly to the inside of a
school locker, this magnetic message center combined several best-
selling locker accessories into one compact product: a dry-erase
message board, cork strip for pinned notes, photo holder, and mirror.
The dry-erase panel opens to reveal four molded-in photo clips, with
a mirror behind the panel for quick use between classes. By
combining these functions into one product, it became a new locker
accessory category of its own. It became one of Target’s best-selling
back-to-school items that season and was selected as a featured item
in Target’s back-to-school weekly ad.
Magnetic Message Center
This magnetic locker message board attaches directly to a locker door and
uses EVA foam in an unexpected way to make a low-cost item feel more
dimensional, colorful, and visually distinctive. The design combines a bright
EVA foam body with a thin-gauge metal panel coated with dry erase paint,
then silkscreened with a bold color border to create strong contrast with the
foam frame. A mirror version used the same EVA construction and color
approach. The result is an inexpensive product that does not feel cheap, using
simple materials to create a more playful and engaging back-to-school item.
EVA Dry-Erase Board
Using the construction method of an inexpensive vinyl binder, with a
chipboard core wrapped in printed vinyl with heat-sealed edges, we
repurposed the process to create versatile accessories. Vinyl’s ease
of graphic application makes the product visually appealing while
maintaining durability. During research, we found that most storage
caters only to small loose items, leaving no dedicated space for
slightly larger things like phones or wallets. The storage unit is just
slightly wider than a book, providing practical storage. On the right,
the product combines the two most popular functions: a mirror and
a dry-erase board. With a simple turn, users can access either
function, giving two practical uses in one compact form. This item
attaches easily using a suction cup, keeping it secure and removable.
